Mid-Ulster League Champions
A day to celebrate at Drumglass High School as our U16 boys football team were crowned Mid-Ulster League champions.
Having won all of their games to date, our lads faced the also unbeaten Brownlow Integrated College in a winner takes all final match. With lots of good quality football on show throughout, it was the visitors who started the strongest putting the DHS defence under some early pressure, however, with keeper Lance Clarke and defence led by Harvey Cardwell, in top form, our boys managed to repel the early pressure.
As the half progressed, DHS grew into the game, and before long, some clear-cut chances were created by the excellent Bubacar Fofana, but due to some outstanding goalkeeping, the scoreline remained unchanged.
It was just before half time that the crucial goal was scored. Sustained pressing by striker James McNally led to a turnover in defence, and that man McNally showed some great composure to square the ball to winger Ivo Xavier to fire home into an empty net.
After the interval, Brownlow again took the initiative, and it took some great work by James Montgomery, Kryzsztof Franiak, Rhys Hepburn, and Jack Blair amongst others to keep DHS in the driving seat.
As the clock ticked down, the boys continued to show great organisation and spirit and could have added to their lead when the industrious Jake Steen had two efforts fantastically saved by the impressive Brownlow stopper.
When the final whistle eventually blew, it was met with great elation by the DHS players and sizeable home support. On a proud day for our school, joint captains Zion Todd and Harvey Cardwell were presented with the league trophy, and the boys rightfully celebrated this outstanding success.
Well done to Brownlow Integrated College for playing their part in such a fitting event and also to referee Lee Tavinder, who officiated the game to the highest standard.
A great season comes to an end for our boys, and no doubt this fantastic group will have great memories of this victory for many years to come
