In Drumglass High School the Learning Support Centre caters for pupils who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs where it is recommended, they are taught in a specialist setting.
The LSC has a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a pupil centred approach to meet individual pupils needs. The LSC consists of four small group setting classes: Two in KS3 and two in KS4. Each Key Stage has an LSC class that caters for a wide variety of learning and medical needs. They also have a social and communication class that caters specifically for pupils with ASD.
Each classroom is laid out in a specific format to meet individual needs and support learning.
In the Learning Support Centre pupils benefit from having access to our sensory room and nurture suite. The specialist nurture areas allow for life skills to be taught and provides pupils with a safe space to enjoy reward or chill out time. The rooms can also be used for one to one and small group work when needed. The sensory room is well-equipped, and all our pupils enjoy spending time and using the resources in it to help regulate when needed.

Teaching Staff

We have four SEN specialist teachers and a wonderful team of Classroom Assistants dedicated to teaching and supporting learning in all curricular areas.
Within the LSC we run a scheme of reversed integration, giving our students access to mainstream classes where possible. In the LSC, students follow similar themes to mainstream students in KS3 and KS4 these have been adapted to meet the individual needs of each pupil within the LSC.
The LSC also benefits from having Pablo our school therapy dog. Pablo works within the LSC each day and has a timetable which he follows to support pupils with their reading, social and communication skills. He is a valued member of the team and is loved by the entire school community.

Key information on the Learning Support Centre:
The Specialist Provision is an intrinsic component of our Whole School Special Educational Needs Provision in Drumglass High School.
We currently have a four-class provision which consists of the following:

KS4 LSC and KS4 ASD

The Specialist Provision Department aims:

-
To ensure that all learners with special educational needs (SEN) received the support they require to achieve their full potential alongside their peers.
-
To provide a positive and supportive learning environment, where all learners are encouraged to learn together and participate fully in school life.
-
To provide individualised support and interventions to meet the individual needs of each learner.
-
To promote the social and emotional well-being our learners, helping them to develop positive relationships, self-esteem and resilience.
-
To equip learners with the essential life skills, preparing them for life beyond Drumglass High School.
-
To collaborate with outside agencies to provide comprehensive support for all our learners.
This holistic approach to the education intends to provide opportunities for each learner to achieve full potential in a caring, and supportive environment.
Curriculum- KS3:

Our KS3 curriculum is aligned with the mainstream provision. However, we implement a flexible approach to learning which caters for all abilities and individual needs.
Our KS3 classes follow a three-year programme (Year 8-10), in which our pupils are taught core subjects within the learning support centre by a member of our staff, while a range of subjects are delivered by subject specialists.
Subjects taught within the department:
-
AQA English
-
AQA Mathematics
-
AQA Geography
-
AQA History
-
AQA Life Skills
-

-

-
The Arts
-

-

-

-

-

In addition, we provide small group intervention for our learners. We work with all subject teachers to identify pupils who would benefit from bespoke support to access learning across the curriculum.
Curriculum- KS4:.
The programme of learning in KS4 is bespoke to the level of need and pupil areas of interest. Here is a list of qualifications which are available to the learners:
-
Entry to GCSE Level English
-
Entry to GCSE Level Maths

Pupils enrolled in the Specialist Provision also have the option of completing GCSE courses in the mainstream provision as we use reverse integration. We work closely with parents and learners to plan and deliver this in partnership meeting individual pupil needs.
